Optical bistable SOI micro-ring resonators for memory applications

چکیده

The present work focuses on experimental investigations of a bistabile silicon-on-insulator (SOI) micro-ring resonator (MRR). exploits continuous-wave operation the carrier-induced bistability demonstrating stable hysteresis response at through and drop ports when input power exceeds threshold value. Flipping optical provides convenient mechanism for switching MRR output characteristics between two steady states having long holding time. transition these is experimentally investigated. It shown that speed limited by low-to-high 188 ns. Obtained results shows an application passive SOI as all-optical memory cell with complementary outputs.

We demonstrate all-optical logic in a micron-size silicon ring resonator based on the free-carrier dispersion effect in silicon. We show AND and NAND operation at 310 Mbit/s with ~10-dB extinction ratio. The free-carrier-lifetime-limited bit-rate can be significantly improved by active carrier extraction.

In this paper, we proposed an all optical 4-to-2 encoder that has 4 input and 3 output ports. This device generates a 2 bit binary code based on which input port is active. We used nonlinear photonic crystal ring resonators along with optical power splitter for realizing the proposed encoder. In this device the switching rate and area are obtained about 333 GHz and 612µm2 respectively.
